Because we are all Monks and our place of work is a seminary, our work a sacrament, our family a monastery, our home a sanctuary; may we learn what they are teaching us without believing God is elsewhere...

Offices
Thursday of the Third Week of Lent
Everyone who asks will receive; whoever seeks shall find,
and to him who knocks it shall be opened.
Matthew 7:8
Cradling pain for most of the day; treatments long; dis-ease's dissolve slow and laborious. How the Lord can be so generous and patient with our maladies. How he can spin goodness out of the threads of suffering. His offices of love and healing stand open, beckoning to come into with just a shift of consciousness, a turning of our hearts.
All day long a fleck
of the kingdom kept calling
with its' soft voice saying
"Here!" and again, "Here!"
And as it happens
in doing the running stitch of necessity
some of its splendor
snags your distraction
and you finally hear
the music of your broom
gathering dust over the floor;
a cardinal singing from skeins of thickets;
rustling chants from the monasteries
of the fields;
the voice of your small child mingling
with the voice of God,
saying "Here!" and again "Here!"
in the dappling light
hands reach through
to help another.
