The Space Between

"Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit."

If “music is in the space between the notes”
                                           as Debussy wrote,

                                         then love is also
                                           in the emptiness

                                         between the lover
                                           and the beloved:

between the hand reaching to help
                                           and the one in need,

                                         between the sorrow
                                           and the joy,

                                         between the loss
                                           and the healing,

                                         between a prayer spoken
and the latticed silence of listening,

between a pilgrim on the way
                                           and the difficult conversion,

                                         between the grace offered
                                           and gently received,

between the dwindling threads of light
                                           and the shawl of night,

                                         between the last heart beat
                                           and none returning,

                                         in the truth
                                           and love embracing,

                                         the trinity
                                            and the three.

  2. Cindy,
This piece is so nice. I feel like the simplicity of the couplets bolsters the simplicity of your premise: if this, then that/if music, then love. "the latticed silence of listening" is my favorite phrase - such beautiful language. I appreciate, too, the relationship between "threads" and "shawl" in the 10th stanza. The love that exists in the space between is such a profound image and belief. It brings with it a soft peace. Many blessings to you!
