Sorrow

Do not let the waves overwhelm me;
  do not let the deep waters swallow me;
  do not let the well’s mouth engulf me.
                                            Psalms 68

She takes her sorrow for a walk.
It runs full out,
laps the trail
as a great stag of fire
leaping
into the fleeting forever of now;
becomes black wings
circling over
the evening's hunkering,
coiling moon shadows,
the long nails of night
tapping tapping tapping
on the closed and dark-
glass
window of her heart.

  1. Cynthia,

    Oh my! You have captured sorrow perfectly. I especially like the last 4 lines, though I think the first line is going to stay with me forever.

    2. Cynthia,

      I meant to return earlier to give you my condolences and say I will pray for your mother-in-law. Yes, our hearts ache as we share the grief of our loved ones. They also ache even when we don't know the bereaved because we recognise the pain and can feel echoes of our own, and in some way wish no one had to undergo such suffering. But God is good and of course, holds our hands as we grieve. May He bless you all greatly. xx

  2. I will sound like a parrot if I comment - I would say the same thing as Sue. And that first sentence will stay with me, I know.

  3. Cynthia, it is a joy to be able to write on someone else's behalf, or to memorialize another's experience. Or even to write something for someone that they will never see. This piece really works. The first line as one short sentence evokes the suddenness of grief's onset. And then the all-encompassing nature comes through in your metaphor. It is a lovely piece. Many blessings to you and your family.

  4. Thank you Amy...I have been going through a small part Pauline's grief and this came from that and memories of earlier griefs. The first line came to me and wouldn't leave so I had to write the poem!! God Bless friend...
