Late Surprise

Rain came late.
The garden hidden in tall grasses sang out;
tomatoes and peppers trying to turn into
themselves;
the zucchini already blustering around the big squash leaves
for sheer delight.

What a surprise to find gifts of joy
in a wild array of weeds and grasses.

The truth of the matter is, and I know how to tell it slant, we are terrible gardeners.  If we had to survive on the patch of crabgrass and weeds we would be pressed to hover around Walmart after hours. We begin with good intentions and our plantings look so orderly and very garden-ly until the weeds come on and we are too busy or lazy to pull them, or it is too hot and the grasses are over our heads. Sometimes the veggies choke out enough nutrients to become and walla, we have produce to fill a cereal bowl. The seed catalogs make it look so simple.
